We are committed to detecting tissue changes as early as possible using enhanced visual inspection at every checkup, because early detection ensures the best chances for effective treatment when concerns are most treatable.

What Is Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screening is included with every dental exam at our practice. We believe early detection of oral cancer can save lives, so this screening is a standard part of our care.

How We Perform Oral Cancer Screening

During your oral cancer screening, we visually inspect your tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat for any changes or abnormalities. We also use gentle palpation, touching and feeling for any lumps or hardened tissue in your mouth, to assess the texture of areas that might not look different visually. If anything unusual is found, we photograph it and develop a prompt follow-up plan to monitor or refer for further testing if needed.

Oral Cancer Screening as Part of a Complete Oral Exam

Oral cancer screening is part of our soft tissue assessment, included in every oral exam. Our exams offer a step-by-step approach: modern, low-dose digital X-rays, a hands-on review of your teeth, gum margins and joints, and a soft tissue and oral cancer screening. We then provide clear written treatment options and transparent pricing.

Why Regular Screenings Matter

Regular dental check-ups are essential for allowing early detection and treatment of dental problems, including oral cancer. Even when you practise excellent home oral hygiene, some issues, like early signs of oral cancer, may only be found in a professional exam. Many oral cancers develop in the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and throat.

What We Look for During Screening

During oral cancer screening, we look for abnormal growths, sores that do not heal within two weeks, red or white patches, or any other suspicious areas. If we identify any abnormalities, we may recommend further tests such as a biopsy to ensure early and accurate diagnosis.

Who Needs Regular Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screening is important for everyone, but it is especially vital for patients with certain risk factors. These include tobacco users (including smokers and those who use smokeless tobacco), those who frequently consume alcohol, people with a past personal or family history of oral cancer, and individuals who have been exposed to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Smokers in particular face a heightened risk for oral cancer, making regular screening even more important.

The Connection Between Oral and Overall Health

Oral health is closely linked to your overall health. Poor oral health has been connected with various systemic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and even certain types of cancer. Problems in your mouth can be a sign of larger health issues, and lesions or other oral symptoms may be the first indication of systemic disorders. That is why an oral cancer screening is a key part of protecting your health.
